The word peace is thrown around a lot and used in a range of ways. We are all familiar with sayings such as peace of mind, peace and quiet, peace and joy, and especially this time of year, peace on earth.
Have you ever thought about these sayings and what they mean to you? Do you practice having peace in your life and apply it to your wellness?
To follow are four simple tips on living in peace even amid uncertainty and chaos.
Tip One - Turn off the news. I know this is a tough one for some, and yet it is essential to let your mind be in peace. I trust that if the sky is falling or something happens that is important for me to know, I will hear it from someone. It is not only okay but vital to your well-being to step away from all the bad, sad, negative and often scary news in the world.
Tip Two - Limit your time on social media and scrolling your feed. Everybody has an opinion, the world is diverse, and we do not all agree on politics, how to raise our kids, cook a holiday meal, or even what desserts or drinks are the best. Some posts are intentionally created to evoke emotions and steal your peace, leaving you to feel unsettled. Unless your social media feeds are full of baby giggles and puppies, give it rest.
Tip Three - Allow yourself to make mistakes. Nothing will steal your peace quicker than being a perfectionist. My mom was a perfectionist, and just one mistake would start a chain reaction of more mistakes until she was in a complete frenzy. I, too, have this trait and, fortunately, have learned to walk away. I know you know this, but I'll say anyway. Mistakes are gifts that teach us what doesn't work in order to create something magical that does. Mistakes are good.
Tip Four - Do something just for you a least once daily. Is your day spent taking care of everyone else but yourself? Be it your boss, family, friends, etc.? For most people the answer is yes and yet, when we leave ourselves out stress builds, we become easily tired and anxiety can creep in so subtly that you can’t figure out where it came from. Carving out YOU time to take a warm, relaxing bath, exercise, read, journal or simply just sit alone in quiet can help keep peace in your body and soul.
When we are at peace with ourselves and in ourselves, others feel it. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with you.
